International Medical Volunteer Projects

offers international volunteer and internship abroad opportunities
throughout the year for students, professionals and tourist to the
Island of Zanzibar, in the African country of Tanzania. The following
areas of volunteer and internship placecements are available at the
moment.
Medical Volunteer
Work Abroad in Zanzibar
Our
Africa
health volunteer placements are open
to medical professionals including doctors, dentists, nurses, medical
laboratory technologists, etc. They are also open to students in all
medical
fields. A professional license, relevant student ID or college letter
showing
your program and level of study is required at the start of your
medical
volunteer placement abroad.
All
prospective international medical volunteers
also need to submit a resume showing their area and level of expertise
and what
they hope to achieve from the medical volunteer placement in Africa. Prep-program
students (such as pre-meds)
should apply for the medical
internships, not the medical
volunteer
program.
The
Zanzibar Hospital located at Zanzibar, 5 km
walking distance from Zanzibar Stone Town. The Hospital receives about
80 to 120 patients per day. The hospital has 2 Doctors, 1 dentist, 8
registered Nurses and 28 Clinical officers.
The Hospital
offers
Primary, Secondary and Tertiary services to Zanzibar, Pemba and Ugunja
The following
departments exist at the hospital: OPD (out Patient department),
Emergency Department, Mental Health, Pediatrics including Neonatal,
Surgical Department, OBGYN (0bstetric and Gynecology), Anesthesia and
ICU, Ophthalmology, PT (Physical Therapy) and Orthopedics, Dental Unit.
Medical, Nursing
and
Dental Interns can apply to volunteer in departments of choice. Nursing
Interns can participate in basic Nursing care such as taking vital
signs, dressing wounds, taking patient’s history, counseling
patients, providing assurance and moral support to patients’
family, disbursing minor drugs etc
Both Medical and
Dental Interns will work under the supervision of the Local Licensed
Health Care Providers. The level of the participation will depend on
the individual’s training and demonstrated skills.
All
Interns/Volunteers are advised to bring health equipments such as
gloves, lab coats and closed shoes to use at the placement.

Starting Dates: 1st
and 3rd Wednesday of every Month Airport
Arrival Time:
Any time of that Wednesday.
Accommodation and
Meals: Zanzibar
overseas
volunteers and interns
abroad stay with carefully selected host families and sometimes in
local hostels and are provided two local meals per day; breakfast and
dinner.
Transportation:
Volunteer
and internship placements in Zanzibar are
within walking distance of the host home. You can also take local
public transport to and from your volunteer project work. The cost will
normally not exceed USD 1.00 per day.
Schedule
of work:
Normally Mondays
to Fridays; 4 – 8 hours a day. Most weekends are free to
explore Tanzania and Zanzibar.
Age Limit:
18 and
above, from all countries of origin and
residence. Persons under 18 are allowed provided they must be
accompanied by someone aged 21 and above who will
be a
guardian or community leader such as a school shaperon, priest etc.
Length
of
Program: We have
volunteer
abroad and international internship opportunities for long term,
short-term periods and for groups. You
can volunteer or intern for a minimum
of two (2) weeks to 6 months with possibilities for one year placements
for the right candidates.

Groups of more than two people are
guaranteed a group discount.
