The
main feature of
the program is about one week of
intensive language study combined with tours to places of cultural and
historical importance in the country. The language taught is Swahili or
Kiswahili which is main language spoken in East and Central Africa.
Swahili is also the national language of both Tanzania and
Kenya.
Normaly the Swahili language study occurs in the mornings
while the tours take place in the afternoon.
A typical schedule of the Language and Culture
Program is as follows:
Day
1:
Arrival and pick up from the Kilimanjaro International Airport, in
Arusha, Tanzania and transfer to host household home; in-country
registration.
Day 2: Orientation. About 2 to 4 hours lecture at the home of your
host. Topics covered during orientation lecture will include Tanzania
culture, history, customs, politics, geography, and necessary health
precautions, and various other topics, such as the diversity of
Tanzania
life. Afternoon is free for exploring Moshi region and getting to know
your host family.
Day 3: Morning - Swahili Language classes for 2-3 hours. Afternoon will
be spent taking a guided tour of downtown Arusha, including the United
nations Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UNICTR); famous
Tengeru market and the local curio
market
where interns abroad and international volunteers can buy curios and
interact with local people.
Day 4: Saturday, visit two important attractions in Moshi including the
Snake Park and the
Maasai Cultural Museum. You will have an opportunity
to take a camel ride, pat a few friendly snakes and simply see the
non-friendly ones. Other animals to see at the two sites include,
different species of snakes like the python and cobra, tortoise,
crocodiles, different species of birds, peacocks and zebras. At the
Maasai Cultural Museum, experience the traditional and cultural
settings of the Maasai, East Africa’s most celebrated
indigenous community.
Day 5: Sunday- Free. Volunteers abroad and overseas interns can join
the family at their weekend activities or explore Tanzania life on
their own with the advice of the coordinator and host family - visit
various parts of the city of Moshi or Moshi.
Day 6: Swahili Language classes (2-3 hours). In the afternoon overseas
volunteers and international interns tour will drive to Lake Duluti a
small crater lake east of Arusha along the Moshi Road. Walk along the
nature trail around Lake Duluti and
enjoy the site and feel of the
serene surrounding. See if you can spot the over 130 different bird
species that call this park home including kingfishers, osprey,
buzzards, eagles, doves, storks and babets. Go on a canoe ride on this
beautiful East African Rift Valley Crater Lake, and if you have the
tools, take time to do some fishing. Alternatively visit USA river zoo
and interact with the Zebras, giraffes and lots of birds at this zoo.
Day 7: Morning: End of Swahili Language classes for 2-3 hours.
Afternoon, program evaluation and free time. |
Please
note that
the Language and
Culture program is not provided on
its own. It is only provided in combination with one other programs,
that is, either Standard international volunteer or internship programs
or one of the jungle safari adventure or beach holiday probgrams.

volunteers and interns
abroad stay with carefully selected host families and sometimes in
local hostels and are provided two local meals per day; breakfast and
dinner. You will arrange to cater for your own lunch.
Transportation: Volunteer
and interns tranportation during the Zanzibar language and culture
program is fully covered by the program.
Schedule
of Program:
Normally Mondays
to Fridays: 4 – 8 hours a day. Weekends are free to
explore Tanzania and Zanzibar.
Age
Limit: 18
and
above, from all countries of origin and
residence. Persons under 18 are allowed provided they must be
accompanied by someone aged 21 and above who will
be a
guardian or community leader such
as a school shaperon, priest etc.
Length
of
Program: We
have
volunteer
abroad and international internship opportunities for long term,
short-term periods and for groups. The language and Culture
program takes one week only.
