Day
1:
Arrival and pick up from the Jomo
Kenyatta
International Airport, in
Nairobi,
Kenya and
transfer
to host family home, registration
Day 2:
Orientation. About 2 to 4 hours lecture at
the home of your host. Topics covered during orientation lecture will
include East African culture, history, customs, politics, geography,
and necessary health precautions, and various other topics, such as the
diversity of Kenyan life.
Afternoon is free for exploring rural Kenyan life and getting to know
your host family.
Day 3:
Morning - Swahili Language classes for 2-3
hours. Afternoon will be spent taking a guided tour of downtown Nairobi,
including
parliament buildings; the railways museum and the famous Maasai market where
international
volunteers can buy
curios and interact with
the famous Maasai
people dressed in their traditional outfits.
Day 4
& 5: Weekend
- Free. volunteers abroad and
overseas interns can join the family at their weekend activities or
explore Kenya life on
their own with the advice of the coordinator and host family - visit
various parts of the city, or travel to nearby Lake Naivasha a fresh
water lake and a game reserve or the city of Nakuru, host to world
famous bird and white rhino sanctuary with over 400 bird species.
Day 6:
Swahili Language classes (2-3 hours). In
the afternoon, take a guided tour of the Giraffe Center found
in Nairobi’s
Lang’ata Suburb to view and feed the famous
Rothschild’s giraffe which
is an endangered species for a specially constructed viewing platform.
Day 7:
Morning – End of Swahili Language classes
for 2-3 hours. In the afternoon, the volunteers visit The Nairobi City Park that
features
lawns and benches picnics, walking paths, frames of swings a bandstand
or concerts. The Sykes’ monkeys
are the most prominent of the Park’s wildlife. These monkeys
are dark
grey in color with a thick collar of white fur, and have a long
tail.
The
Sykes’ monkeys are friendly and gentle and seldom bite.
Baboons and
Velvet Monkeys can also be seen at the park. The monkeys feed on wild
fruits and leaves in the forest but also beg for fruits and nuts from
visitors.
Day 8:
End
of Language Program: Submit
your Evaluation of the Language
program to the Kenyan
staff then proceed to your volunteer placement.
