Africa in pictures

The one week African language and culture program entails training in local culture and one 
local language as participants get a taste of what it is like to live with an African family. The language taught in most of East Africa is Swahili.

Training is arranged to provide room for tour places of cultural importance in the city and its environs. Such places will often include museums and parks; ethnic dance shows; city landmarks and historical structures. Sometimes a hike of the country will be included.  

A typical schedule of the Language and Culture Program is as follows:

Day 1: Arrival and pick up from the the airport. Transfer to host family home, registration.

Day 2: Orientation. About 2 to 4 hours lecture at the home of your host. Topics covered during orientation lecture will include East African culture, history, customs, politics, geography, and necessary health precautions, and various other topics. Afternoon is free for exploring local life and getting to know your host family.

Day 3: Morning - Swahili Language classes for 2-3 hours. Afternoon will be spent taking a guided tour of  the city. 

Day 4 & 5: Weekend - Free. volunteers abroad and overseas interns can join the family at their weekend activities or explore African life on their own with the advice of the coordinator and host family.

Day 6-7: Swahili Language classes (2-3 hours). In the afternoon, take a guided tour of cultural, national or historical inorpratnace or a park. 

Day 8: End of Program and Program Evaluation. Transfer to and introduction at the Placement project.

Please note that the Language and Culture program is not provided on its own. It is only provided in combination with one other programs, that is, either Basic or one of the adventure programs.
