Africa
Volunteer with
HIV/AIDS Awareness and Care
In collaboration with the local community, a number of local HIV/AIDS
projects seek to foster awareness
about HIV/AIDS by offering free
training
programs for the communities in East Africa.
The structure of
programs vary but in most cases, overseas
HIV and AIDS volunteers in Africa are first exposed to the main issues
surrounding HIV
and
AIDS mainly in the first
week. In
subsequent
weeks, international volunteers in East Africa accompany local
staff in
their routine activities. Those doing volunteer work abroad with the
HIV
program will
participate in
offering free medical clinics for patients,
families and people wanting to test for HIV and AIDS.
Overseas
volunteers and international interns also participate in home
visits with the patients and
families to provide treatment, food, and care and sometimes to help
with
home
chores.
International
volunteers will also be involved in teaching
about
Sexually Transmitted Diseases including HIV and AIDS, and teaching
about sexuality, to youths
and parents. Overseas interns and volunteers abroad with the HIV and
AIDS program in East Africa should also
be prepared to visit with and provide support to children; orphans of
HIV and
AIDS,
Overseas
volunteers and interns abroad with the AIDS program
should come prepared to learn and participate in community
education; visit with HIV
affected
and infected members of the community; assist the affected community
members with their domestic
chores.
International
volunteers and overseas interns will be expected to work
for
between 3 to 8
hours a day.
